Subwavelength silicon photonics for on-chip mode-manipulation

Abstract On-chip mode-manipulation is one of the most important physical fundamentals for many photonic integrated devices and circuits. In past years, great progresses have been achieved on subwavelength silicon photonics on-chip by introducing special waveguides. Among them, there are two popular waveguide structures available. One hybrid plasmonic waveguides (HPWGs) other subwavelength-structured (SSWGs). this paper, we focus applications with manipulation effective indices, modal field profiles, mode dispersion, as well birefringence. First, a review given about fundamental-mode manipulation, including high-performance polarization-handling devices, efficient converters chip-fiber edge-coupling, ultra-broadband power splitters. Second, higher-order-mode multimode converters, bends, crossing. Finally, some emerging discussed.
